The Last Mile Evaluation

Research Team

Project Overview

The Last Mile (TLM) has provided courses on computer programming, web development, and entrepreneurship to incarcerated individuals for over ten years. The courses aim to teach returning citizens invaluable, marketable skills as well as connect them to support after release. TLM currently teaches in 21 classrooms across seven states, in both men and women’s prisons. TLM has partnered with the CJP lab to run a randomized controlled trial to determine the effectiveness of the TLM courses in reducing recidivism compared with individuals who do not take part in the courses. CJP researchers will first assist in overhauling recruitment and application processes to ensure randomization is in place in all TLM institutions; Ideally, this will allow CJP researchers to run an RCT in every institution where TLM has courses.
